This is a shot of the corner of my yard where I decided to
dig a hole on Mother's Day 2002.
My initial thought was to provide some running water to
attract more birds to the feeders. I had been getting
a variety of woodpeckers, blue jays, finches and had
chickadees nesting in a house I put up for them in a tree
outside the studio.

|
I thought maybe a 4 foot by 3
foot hole would be nice, but I kept digging and digging and
had read that if I ever wanted to put koi fish in the pond I
would need to be at least 3 feet deep.
|
|
After
about 3 hours of digging I still was only at 2 and 1/2 feet
deep, but to get there my hole was growing to about 6 feet
wide.
I worked on it during the
week in the evenings and eventually hit over 3 feet deep,
but I had a hole about 9 feet wide.

I made shelves for a border to
hold the liner down. I put some sand on the bottom and
cardboard and felt along the sides.
|
 |
I had many trips to the rock and garden stores. I also
hit a couple pond stores and bought the pump and filter.
After about 3 trips, I had hauled over 2,000 lbs of rock,
sand and cinderblocks in preparation for the next weekend.
I also had about 350 lbs of liner forklifted into my
truck. |
 |
I could only purchase the 20 ft wide liner in a roll of
50ft. I cut a piece about 20 ft deep and rolled it out
on the lawn and rinsed off each side. |
 |
I dropped the liner in the hole. |
 |
I filled it close to the top. I thought it would take
hours, but it actually took less then a half hour. I
placed some 3 inch flagstone along the edges. I
figured that this would hide the liner when the water levels
went down. Of course, I didn't realized that the water
would go down so quickly - 3 days! That's Colorado. |
 |
At this point, I had done just about everything myself,
except my neighbor helping me get the liner out of my truck!
My friend, Heather, came over and we tried putting the
moss rock along the border and it wasn't working. We
decided to do a flagstone run! We got back and laid
some big pieces along the edge.

 |
We started piling the waterfall, but it was getting
late. On Sunday, I tried working on the waterfall
without much luck. I didn't like it and it was leaking
too much.
I ran to a pond store and bought some of the black
expanding foam. I called it quits for the weekend and
decided to wait until next weekend to finish.
